Love them or hate them, virtual races are here to stay, and with the constant limits put on race directors regarding their events, most races are offering a virtual choice when their event has to be canceled. The coolest part of this to me is getting to be part of a race I might otherwise not get to run.
This is why I jumped at the chance to run the Fargo Marathon virtually! While I did decide to run the 5k distance due to foot issues, I still kept thinking how cool this would be to participate in and get a medal from Fargo! Bonus I get to run it on whatever course I choose, without an ultra-early start time, and my own personal bathroom!
Besides getting some cool race swag with Fargo on it, there are other great reasons I chose to run this race.
- There are varying distances to chose from – You can run the full 26.2 or you have the option of a half marathon, 10k, or in my case the 5k.
- Using this virtual option to get a race blip on your training calendar – Using this shorter distance I can break up training monotony by throwing a virtual race in the mix. Since most races have dated deadlines to complete, it keeps me on track with my training.
- Not to lose emphasis, I will mention again…The Swag. Full transparency here…I do love to run. I do. But I love me some race bling and shirts. Packet pick up (or in this case mail drop) is one of my favorite features when entering races, and that finishers medal! Oh yeah!

- But in case you needed just one more reason to feel good about running the Virtual Fargo Marathon, this race also is doing good. They have established Shoes for Kids, raising money to provide shoes to kids in need.
