We are in the final stretch of the year of canceled races, and while many race companies are trying to resurrect in-person races, there is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding them. Cases are rising as the temperatures are dropping so regulations seem to be changing again, putting doubt into the minds of runners regarding large in-person races.
With this in mind, as well as, an overabundance of caution regarding family members we may be in contact with over the holidays I have decided to participate in America’s Virtual Turkey Trot this year with my son. I was given my entry as an opportunity to try it out, and I can tell you we are pretty excited.
My son and I run a local turkey trot each year we are in town with my brother-in-law and some other friends. First I am kicking myself for all of the “off” years we could have run virtually while out of town. Second, my kid and I run exactly 2 races together each year. The Spring race we run was canceled, and his comment about “guessing our turkey run would be too” made me even more excited about keeping our turkey day tradition.

3 Tips on choosing the right Virtual turkey Trot!
- Check to make sure the race you are looking at has distances all of your family members can join in. You may be ready to hit 13.1 miles for that Turkey, but dear Aunt Edna may only be looking for a 5k. A selection of distances brings more familial inclusion.
- Make sure you love the swag! Shirts, Medals, Hats oh my! Wearing your badge/medal of honor along with your race day shirt is half of the fun! Order a size up if you really plan on packing on the holiday pounds. Plus wearing matching race shirts/jackets = epic family photos (or awkward family photo your choice)
- Look to choose a virtual race that gives back. Thanksgiving is all about being thankful for what we have. The best way to show this is by giving back to others who may not have as much.
